Digital SAT format in 2026: sections, timing, and scoring
The SAT is now taken on a laptop or tablet in College Board's Bluebook app. It's shorter than the old paper test and adapts to how you're doing. Here's exactly how it works.
The sections
| Section | Questions | Time | Modules |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading and Writing | 54 | 64 minutes | 2 modules of 27 questions, 32 minutes each |
| Math | 44 | 70 minutes | 2 modules of 22 questions, 35 minutes each |
There's a 10-minute break between the sections. The whole test takes 2 hours and 14 minutes of testing time.
How the adaptive modules work
Each section starts with a first module that has a mix of easy, medium, and hard questions. Based on how you do, Bluebook gives you either a harder or an easier second module. The harder second module gives you access to higher scores, so accuracy on Module 1 matters more than speed.
Inside a module you can skip around, flag questions for review, and change answers until time runs out. Once a module ends, you can't go back to it.
Reading and Writing
Every question has its own short passage, usually one paragraph or a poem excerpt, sometimes with a table or graph. Questions fall into four domains: Information and Ideas, Craft and Structure, Expression of Ideas, and Standard English Conventions. Grammar questions test boundaries (commas, semicolons, colons) and form, structure, and sense (agreement, verb tense, pronouns).
Math
Math covers Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, and Geometry and Trigonometry. About a quarter of the questions ask you to type your own answer instead of choosing from four options. You can use a calculator on every question, and the Desmos graphing calculator is built into Bluebook. A reference sheet with common geometry formulas is available too.
Scoring
Each section is scored from 200 to 800, for a total of 400 to 1600. There's no penalty for wrong answers, so never leave a question blank. A few questions in each module are unscored pretest questions, and you can't tell which ones they are. Scores usually arrive about two weeks after test day.
