What an SAT percentile means

A percentile is the share of a comparison group that scored at or below your score. College Board's own example: if your score is in the 75th percentile, about 75% of the comparison group scored at or below it. A percentile describes rank. It isn't the percent of questions you got right.

User percentiles and nationally representative percentiles

College Board publishes two percentiles for every score, each based on a different group.

The two numbers can differ by several points. A 1200 is at the 75th user percentile and the 81st nationally representative percentile, while a 900 is at the 32nd and the 29th. When you compare yourself with other students applying to college, use the user percentile, because everyone in that group took the SAT.

Your official score report shows an All Tester percentile, which College Board describes as based on the actual scores of SAT takers from the past three graduating classes. That's the same kind of comparison as the user percentile here. College Board's online score portal also shows state and country percentiles. If the number on your report differs slightly from this table, quote your report.

Why your section percentiles don't match your total

Each section has its own table, and the total has a third. The same score can rank differently in each section. A 600 in Reading and Writing is at the 72nd user percentile, while a 600 in Math is at the 75th. A 1200 total is at the 75th. You can't average two section percentiles to get your total percentile, so use the total table for your total.

How much a few points move your percentile

Most students score near the middle of the scale, so percentiles change fastest there. From 1000 to 1100 the user percentile goes from 47 to 62, about 1.5 percentile points for every 10 score points. At the top the steps are small. A 1400 is at the 93rd percentile and a 1500 is at the 97th. A 50-point gain from 1050 changes your rank much more than a 50-point gain from 1450 does, though both can matter for admissions.

Percentiles and college admissions

A national percentile tells you where you stand among all SAT takers. Colleges care more about how you compare with their own applicants. For that, look up the middle 50% SAT range of a college's admitted or enrolled students, which most colleges publish in section C9 of their Common Data Set. A 1300 is at the 85th percentile nationally but can still sit below the middle of the range at a very selective college. Our guide to what counts as a good SAT score shows how to set a target from those ranges.

For context, College Board's 2026 annual report puts the average total for the class of 2026 at 1045, with a median of 1030. The percentile table pools three graduating classes. Its 50th user percentile is 1020, close to that single-year figure but not identical.

Move up a few percentile points

If you want a higher percentile, start with the skills that cost you the most points. SAT Owl's free 24-question diagnostic samples all 8 content domains and gives you a predicted score for each section.
