In the xyxy-plane, line ℓ\ell passes through the origin and is parallel to the graph of 2x+7y=72x + 7y = 7. If the point (a,b)(a, b) lies on line ℓ\ell and a≠0a \ne 0, what is the value of ba\frac{b}{a}?

Answer: -2/7

Line ℓ\ell passes through (0,0)(0, 0), so its equation is y=mxy = mx, and for any point (a,b)(a, b) on it with a≠0a \ne 0, ba=m\frac{b}{a} = m. The graph of 2x+7y=72x + 7y = 7 can be written as y=−27x+1y = -\frac{2}{7}x + 1, and parallel lines have equal slopes. So m=−27m = -\frac{2}{7} and ba=−27\frac{b}{a} = -\frac{2}{7}.

Answering −72-\frac{7}{2} uses the reciprocal of the slope, but ba\frac{b}{a} is rise over run from the origin, which is the slope itself.
