x2−y=5x^2 - y = 5
x+y=7x + y = 7
The system of equations has two solutions, (x1,y1)(x_1, y_1) and (x2,y2)(x_2, y_2). What is the value of y1+y2y_1 + y_2?

Answer: 15

From the second equation, y=7−xy = 7 - x. Substitute into the first: x2−(7−x)=5x^2 - (7 - x) = 5, so x2+x−12=0x^2 + x - 12 = 0 and (x+4)(x−3)=0(x + 4)(x - 3) = 0. The solutions have x=3x = 3 and x=−4x = -4, with y=4y = 4 and y=11y = 11. So y1+y2=4+11=15y_1 + y_2 = 4 + 11 = 15.

Answering −1-1 gives the sum of the xx-coordinates, not the yy-coordinates.
