A data set consists of the seven values 10,14,15,15,18,21,10, 14, 15, 15, 18, 21, and xx. If the mean of the data set is equal to its median, what is the value of xx?

Answer: 12

Of the six known values, four are at most 1515 (10,14,15,1510, 14, 15, 15) and four are at least 1515 (15,15,18,2115, 15, 18, 21). So wherever xx falls, the 44th value in order is 1515, and the median is 1515. For the mean to be 1515, the sum must be 7×15=1057 \times 15 = 105. The known values sum to 9393, so x=105−93=12x = 105 - 93 = 12.

Answering 1515 assumes xx must equal the median, but x=15x = 15 makes the mean 1087\frac{108}{7}, not 1515.
