A biologist modeled the mass yy, in grams, of a bacterial culture xx days after the start of an experiment with an exponential function of the form y=a(b)xy = a(b)^x, where aa and bb are positive constants. The model predicts a mass of 6060 grams after 11 day and 86.486.4 grams after 33 days. What is the value of aa?

Answer: 50

From day 11 to day 33, the mass is multiplied by bb twice, so b2=86.460=1.44b^2 = \frac{86.4}{60} = 1.44 and b=1.2b = 1.2. Then a(1.2)1=60a(1.2)^1 = 60, so a=601.2=50a = \frac{60}{1.2} = 50.

Using 6060 as the value of aa is incorrect because aa is the mass at x=0x = 0, not at x=1x = 1.
